5G in Europe

Science communication for the EU Parliament

The Sciencemediahub of the scientific service of the EU Parliament published a comprehensive mapping of 5G technology in Europe.

What is 5G? How does the new telecommunications standard work? Who is involved and how are technology, politics, regulation connected with economy, society and are there downsides of the technology? The Sciencemediahub of the scientific service of the EU Parliament published a comprehensive mapping of 5G technology in Europe. We were involved from the beginning, starting with a workshop that included the EPRS/ESMH team and experts. A rough structure worked out in advance served as a basis for the work. After the workshop, we divided up the tasks in our interantional editorial team. Who takes care of which content areas? Identification of interview partners. Set guidelines for the content. Coordination in terms of scientific accuracy and, of course, exploration of the depth of content. With these guidelines, the work on the content began. Texts, interviews, infographics. In addition, the design was created and a user guidance was worked out. As the project progressed, the editing and weighting of the individual content modules became more and more important. On an ongoing basis, we worked closely with the EPRS/ESMH staff to clarify content details, spoke with experts and, of course, verified data from studies multiple times. An important part of a complex topic like 5G. Finally, we added all content to the KontextMap “5G Technology in Europe” and, together with the EU Parliament team, published the map at a public event initiated for the topic. After we finished our work, the EPRS/ESMH staff continued to update the map themselves, adding new findings and policy developments.
